Here is the tournament result report for WDDGA's seventh tournament: White River Disc Golf Course - Pro David Smothermon and Masters Stephen Pfeiffer win again. Amateur Dino Christianson play his second tournament and put on strong pro-like performance!
The Halloween Open was a local (1 day, 2 rounds) tournament that took place on Saturday, October 25 at White River Disc Golf Course in Auburn. It was an overcast day with temperatures in the 50's when we started. The overcast clouds gradually broke up to allow for the sunshine to shine through and the temperatures went up in the low 70's as the tournament progressed through out the day.We had our 2nd best tournament turnout for the year of 2008 with 16 men and 2 women players participating. The 2 women players that showed up was the first time ever WDDGA had local women players participating. In the past, the women that played in 2 WDDGA tournaments were from out of state and outside of the Seattle area. With the men, there was 5 Masters players, 6 Amateur players, and 5 Pro players. White River DG Course has both blue (pro) and red (amateur) tees for every hole. In the first round, we played from the blue tee. In the second round, we played from the red tee. In the first round, it was very competitive among all Pro players as the scores were different by 4 strokes between the leader and last place. Chas Andrus put on a surprise strong show by contending in the lead with Mike Gay with a 63 score. David Smothermon and Larry Schaut were one stroke behind waiting to take over the lead. In the second round, David Smothermon turned on the turbo chargers and took off from the rest of the group with the only player getting a sub par score as he shot a 52 for 2 under. Mike Gay simply edged out Chas at the end to take second place prize by 1 stroke. 1) David Smothermon - 64 + 52 = 116 (+8) - First Place - $70 Money Prize 2) Mike Gay - 63 + 56 = 119 (+11) - Second Place - $38 Money Prize 3) Chas Andrus - 63 + 57 = 120 (+12) - Third Place 4) Steven Hopkinson - 67 + 59 = 126 (+18) - Fourth Place 5) Larry Schaut - 64 + 63 = 127 (+19) - Fifth Place After the first round, it became apparent that Stephen Pfeiffer and Scott Martin will contend for the top 2 places at the end of the tournament. With Stephen at 68, Scott knew that he will have play good and hope for Stephen to make mistakes after shooting a 70. Three times in the second round, Scott had caught up even with Stephen but had to see his chance to seize the lead slip through his fingers with bad holes on the next hole. 1) Stephen Pfeiffer - 68 + 64 = 132 (+24) - First Place - $44 Money Prize 2>Scott Martin - 70 + 66 = 136 (+28) - Second Place - $24 Money Prize 3) Brett Boepple - 79 + 63 = 142 (+34) - Third Place 4) Mike Harbeson - 78 + 65 = 143 (+35) - Fourth Place 5) David Updike - 80 + 66 = 146 (+38) - Fifth Place MEN AMATEUR Dino Christainson put on strong "Pro-like" performance in the first round. This was only his second WDDGA tournament. His performance had raised a lot of eyes among the Pro players wondering how the heck he did so good. However we found out that one group of Men Amateur in which Dino was in had played the first round from the red tee instead of the blue tee. Still his first round performance was too much for any Amateur to overcome. Matt Lewandowski played very consistently through out the two rounds to barely edge out Jason Quinn for second place by 1 stroke. Jason Quinn was playing in his first ever WDDGA tournament. Congratulation to him for placing in the top 3 in his first tournament. 1) Dino Christainson - 59 + 65 = 124 (+16) - First Place - 3 disc prizes 2) Matt Lewandowski - 65 + 68 = 133 (+25) - Second Place - 2 disc prizes 3) Jason Quinn - 72 + 62 = 134 (+26) - Third Place - 1 disc prize 4) Ron Kennedy - 68 + 73 = 141 (+33) - Fourth Place 5) Ryan DeWitte - 78 + 68 = 146 (+38) - Fifth Place 6) Eliot Cook - 72 + DQ - Sixth Place (Had to leave after completing the first round) It was apparent who was the better women golfer, but I don't care as I was very pleased to finally see local Deaf women participating in our tournament. Now those two can tell their women friends what disc golf is all about and how much fun it is to play. I hope that will plant the seed to get more Deaf women coming to our tournaments in the future. I wanted to say many thanks to Crystal and Misty for coming to our tournament. 1) Misty Flowers - 81 + 79 = 160 (+52) - First Place - 1 disc golf bag prize 2) Crystal Groth - 109 + 100 = 209 (+101) - Second Place |
