WDDGA's fifth tournament -SUMMER CLASSIC

WDDGA's golden boy David Smothermon dominates the Summer Classic. WDDGA brings a successful weekend attracting 25 players and many fans!
Here is the tournament result for WDDGA's fifth tournament of the year of 2009. The "Summer Classic" was an open (2 days, 3 rounds plus a Final 9 round) tournament that took place on the weekend of June 6 and 7 at White River DG Course in Auburn. The weather was overcast cloudy and temperatures were cool in the low 60s. On Saturday, occasional showers came on and off throughout the day. Now we have a new streak called the "Wet Weather Streak" in which this is our second tournament where we had rain. That streak will only be very short lived as it will be broken by the time our next tournament in August at River DG Course. The Northwest hardly ever get any rain in August through October.

What a good turnout we had as we established a new attendance record in which we broke the record of 22 players in our last month's May Flowers Open. We had 25 players participating in this year's Summer Classic - 22 men (21 Deafies and 1 hearing) and 3 women. There were 11 disc golfers playing in their first ever Summer Classic tournament. WDDGA now has a new Deaf women disc golfer added to our women group. WDDGA welcomed Becky Engel participating in her first ever disc golf tournament. We didn't use the handicap scoring system as we used the open category raw score system. We had 9 Men Pro, 8 Men Masters, 5 Men Amateur, and 3 Women players.

In the first round, all men played from the Blue (Pro) tee while the women played from the Red (Amateur) tee. In the second round, all men played from the Red (Amateur) tee and the women played from the Blue (Pro) tee. In the third round, we played thru the same course we played in the first round. In the Final 9 round, Men Masters played the first 9 holes of the Red (Amateur) Course while the Men Pro played a modified 9-hole course (David Smothermon crafted the modified 9-hole course for the Men Pro).

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY:

MEN PRO: SATURDAY: In the first round, David Smothermon (54), Robin Johnson (57), Ricky Cornish, and Mike Gay (59) were the top 4 disc golfers. In the second round, Ricky Cornish (50) made a run to trim David's lead to get 1 stroke behind him. David Smothermon (53), Robin Johnson (54), and Mike Gay (55) were the next top 3 after Ricky.

SUNDAY: In the third round, David Smothermon and Robin Johnson shared a 55 to lead the pro group. Ricky Cornish and Mike Gay shot a 57 to round out the top 4. David, Ricky, Robin, and Mike were the top 4 Pro players advancing to the Final 9 round. David Smothermon got hot with a score of 27 to win the Men Pro Open championship. Ricky (30), Robin (31), and Mike (33) were the second, third, and fourth place finishers. Congrats to David for earning big bucks on that weekend as he was the first place winner in the Summer Classic Poker Tournament Saturday night.

MEN MASTERS: SATURDAY: In the first round, Stephen Pfeiffer lead the group with a 66 score. Scott Martin (69), Howard Thomas (70), and Mike Harbeson (71) were the next 3 in order after Stephen. In the second round, Scott pounced on Stephen's mistakes to tie up with Stephen with a 63 score while he faltered to a score of 66. However, 2 Masters, David Updike and Brett Boepple, had the better second round with a 62 score. Howard Thomas (64) and David was tied for second 2 strokes behind Scott and Stephen.

SUNDAY: In the third round, Stephen, Scott, and Howard all were in a competitive dogfight hole by hole where each of us had our own moment of glory leading briefly. 3 of us ended up shooting a 67. Stephen and Scott were still tied for first while Hat was hanging out behind us by 2 strokes. David who was tied with Hat before the third round had a 69 to fall 2 strokes at fourth place. Scott, Stephen, Howard, and David were the top 4 Masters players advancing to the Final 9 round. Stephen won the first place prize with a score of 29 holding off Scott who shot a 31 and second place prize. In the meantime, Scott was also trying to hold off Howard as he got real hot with a round of 30 almost overtaking Scott and also Stephen. If it wasn't for Hat missing a couple of those 5 foot putts, he would have been winning the first place prize, but the third place prize was a bitter consolation for him. David wasn't much a factor in the Final 9 as he shot a 34 to claim 4th place prize.

MEN AMATEUR: Gerardo Di Pietro was the main man in the Amateur category all the way from the start. It was his first round score of 60 that simply set him apart from the other 4 amatuers. His nearest competitor, Jason Quinn, had a next best score of 69. Gerardo simply sealed his fate of winning the amateur category with his first round score and played consistently all the way through the next 2 round. Ryan DeWitte who had an awful first round score of 70 got fired up to lead the second round with a 58 score (Gerardo (59)) and had the second best score (65) of the third round. Gerardo had a third round best of 64. However it wasn't enough for Ryan to overtake Gerardo. Gerardo's score was better than the bottom 2 Men Pro players. Next time he wins the Amateur category, he will have to move up to the Pro level.

WOMEN: Nika Landry who is a Women Masters player lead the women group all the way from the start. There was no serious competition from her fellow peers. Instead of being in the Women group, she ought to be contending with the Men Masters as she can really play with the "big boys" from now on. If she was in the Men Masters group, she would have been in 5th place among the 8 Men Masters players. I have my money on her to win the Women category at NDDGC no doubt about it.

Here is the list of combined raw score finishers for each category:

     MEN PRO
1) David Smothermon - 54 + 53 + 55 + 27 = 189 (-2) - First Place - $165 Money Prize
2) Richard Cornish III - 58 + 50 + 57 + 30 = 195 (+4) - Second Place - $115 Money Prize
3) Robin Johnson - 57 + 54 + 55 + 31 = 197 (+6) - Third Place - $50 Money Prize
4) Michael Gay - 59 + 55 + 57 + 33 = 204 (+13) - Fourth Place - T - Shirt Prize
5) Chas Andrus - 61 + 57 + 60 = 178 (+16) - Fifth Place
6) Steven Hopkinson - 61 + 61 + 61 = 183 (+21) - Sixth Place
7) Lionel Simmons - 63 + 59 + 68 = 190 (+28) - Seventh Place
8) Larry Schaut - 68 + 57 + 66 = 191 (+29) - Eighth Place
9) Matt Lewandowski - 70 + 63 + 68 = 201 (+39) - Ninth Place
